Gay marriage was not legal for a long period of time and that’s why in many statistics you will not find a separated box for them. Actually, many statistics don’t separate general marriage from gay marriage rates. However, after 1990 the entire category of marriage rate had dropped. This happened all over the world not only in the United States of America. You may be surprised, but in America, this rate dropped from 233,000 in 2000 to 218,000 in the year of 2004.

For example, when San Francisco approved this type of marriages, there were 4,000 couples that married in the next period. Studies have shown that 57% of the names of the couples were of women. This means that there were more lesbian couples. Demographic studies also showed that more than 60% of the entire number of couples that married in that period were formed by old and better educated people. Actually, more than 74% were aged over 35 years old and 69% were holding a college degree. Maybe you would like to know that in 2000, there were 601,209 committed gay couples in the United States of America.
Now let’s move in another part of the world. After the gay marriage was legalized in the Netherlands, this type of marriage represented 3.6% of the total number of marriages. Surprisingly, this number considerably dropped after the first six months.
